I Must Just Trust!

Proverbs 3:5-6  Trust in the Lord  with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths.  (NKJV).

In times of transition, things can be uncertain, unknown, dangerous and scary.  We are going from one known solid secure place, to another presumably known solid secure place.  Transition is like the bridge linking the two places.  The bridge may not look that good to us, or we may not even see much of the bridge at all.

Transitions and change happens all the time in life, and there are stages when they happen.  Transitioning from a child to a teenager.  Transitioning from a teenager living at home to an adult, fending for yourself.

There’s also transitions from one home to another, transitioning to life after the passing of a loved one, transitioning out of one role into a new one.

It’s in these times of transition we need to simply trust.  Trust God, that He knows what He is doing, knows where He is taking us, and that He has the bridge set and ready and strong enough to get us from one side to the other.

In life transition and change can be forced upon us.  We want God to ‘make things happen’ a certain way, we want circumstances to go this way or that, but they don’t.  We want the mountain to move, but it doesn’t.  We want to water to part, but it doesn’t.

In these times we need to just trust.

The word ‘Trust’ in our text today is the Hebrew word batach (baw-takh’), which means to lie helpless, facedown.  It pictures a servant waiting for the master’s command in readiness to obey, or a defeated soldier yielding himself to the conquering general.

Trust is reliance on the integrity, strength, ability, surety, of a person or thing; confidence.  It is confident expectation of something, or hope.

Then the text says tolean not on your own understanding

There certainly are times when you “don’t know what to think”.  At those times, lean your thinking on Him and His Word.

“Our only concern is to obey the heavenly Father and leave the consequences to Him”.
— Charles Stanley.

That takes some trust, and healthy thinking, but it can be done!

In all your ways acknowledge Him In ALL our ways.  Every moment, when things are good, and when they are not, when we know what to do and when we don’t, when we feel His presence and when we don’t.  Let’s acknowledge the Lord every moment, because after all He is with us every single moment.

He shall direct your paths People are desperate for direction, wanting His will, they want to know where to go.  Which is all good and right.  But this is the fruit of a deeper root, that of TRUST.

We can expect direction from Him, because — He is our Shepherd!

But here’s the thing; as we trust God, lean our thinking on Him and not just our own, acknowledge — worship Him in everything, He gives direction for us.  Which then leads to more trust!  And so it goes on.

  • Trust → Think → Worship → Direction → Trust…

The singer, Lauren Daigle, sings a song called “Trust In You”.  I have watched and listened to this song numerous times on YouTube, and every time, I am moved by the power of the lyrics.  They have impacted my life and I hope they do yours too.

Letting go of every single dream
I lay each one down at Your feet
Every moment of my wandering
Never changes what You see

I’ve tried to win this war I confess
My hands are weary I need your rest
Mighty Warrior, King of the fight
No matter what I face, You’re by my side

When You don’t move the mountains I’m needing You to move
When You don’t part the waters I wish I could walk through
When You don’t give the answers as I cry out to You
I will trust, I will trust, I will trust in You

Truth is, You know what tomorrow brings
There’s not a day ahead You have not seen
So, in all things be my life and breath
I want what You want Lord nothing less

When You don’t move the mountains I’m needing You to move
When You don’t part the waters I wish I could walk through
When You don’t give the answers as I cry out to You
I will trust, I will trust, I will trust in You

You are my strength and comfort
You are my steady hand
You are my firm foundation; the rock on which I stand

Your ways are always higher
Your plans are always good
There’s not a place where I’ll go, You’ve not already stood

When You don’t move the mountains I’m needing You to move
When You don’t part the waters I wish I could walk through
When You don’t give the answers as I cry out to You
I will trust, I will trust, I will trust in You

I will trust in You
I will trust in You
I will trust in You

A little girl and her father were crossing a bridge.  The father was a bit scared so he asked his little daughter, ‘Sweetheart, please hold my hand so that you don’t fall into the river.

The little girl said, ‘No, Dad. You hold my hand.’  ‘What’s the difference?’ Asked the puzzled father.

There’s a big difference,’ replied the little girl.  ‘If I hold your hand and something happens to me, chances are that I may let your hand go. But if you hold my hand, I know for sure that no matter what happens, you will never let my hand go.

In any relationship, the essence of trust is not in its bind, but in its bond.

Yes, I will trust in You!
