Jesus!
Matthew 1:21 “And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.” (NKJV).
We’re only a few days away now from one of the greatest days on our calendar! The day we remember and celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, our Saviour. Churches all around the world will be putting on special events, there’ll be adults and lots of children involved in special services, there’ll be an increased effort to present the Christmas message to those we hope will come to these services.
Life gets busy and we get so involved with the decisions we must make along the way that we sometimes forget what our Christianity is all about. That God the Father, sent His Son, Jesus, to be our Saviour! That is worth remembering well and celebrating wholeheartedly!
Let’s not miss Christmas this year, no matter how many we’ve had! As someone once said: “The innkeeper did because he was too preoccupied with his business. The Jewish leaders did because they couldn’t be bothered to walk five miles to check things out. Herod did because he was threatened by a baby“.
Here are three things Christmas is.
Christmas is: About Jesus! Pure and simple! It is about Jesus coming to the earth, it is about the incarnation of God, and it is about God revealing Himself.
Sadly, Christ has been largely left out of much of 21st century Christmas celebrations. But, those who know, know what it is about. To put Christ back into Christmas, is to acknowledge the start of the whole Gospel story. Christ is the reason for the season. To acknowledge Christ is the reason for the season, and to acknowledge Christ’s virgin birth, is to acknowledge much more, it is to acknowledge Christ is who He said He is, that He did what He said He did, and will do what He says He will do.
Have you ever thought what life and the world would be like had Christ not come? Had He not left His ivory palaces and wrapped himself in the garments of humanity, we would have an inconceivable thought of a Christmas without Christ. But He did come, and both Biblical and secular history agrees.
Christmas is: For You. The joy began with those who first heard it and continues to today to those who still hear it. But it doesn’t matter if you know about the history that Christ was born, that He lived, taught, healed sick people, was crucified, died, and rose again, it matters that for YOU Christ is born, for YOU Christ died and rose.
“… good tidings of great joy which will be to ALL people …” “For unto YOU is born.”. (See Luke 2:10-11).
We don’t preach about an aristocratic Christ; He came for all. He was the Saviour of the people, the friend of publicans and sinners. Jesus is the true “poor man’s friend.” O that each of us, no matter what station in life we’re in, might know that He came for us personally. That we might know, it was for ME the angel announced the arrival of the Saviour!
Christmas is: More than just a Bible story. We will doubtless hear the Christmas story at services this Christmas. And rightly so. We need to hear the story read, from the Bible, about Jesus the Saviour. May we read the Bible this Christmas personally and at our services! People are expecting to hear from it. Not just from a sheet of paper, not just the verses on a screen, but the Bible itself. We want everyone to have a passion and a love for the Bible because it is living, active, and it is the Truth, (See John 8:32, 14:6) so let’s have it in our Christmas services and let the people see us reading from it.
Herbert Lockyer says:
“He was poor, that He might make us rich,
He was born of a virgin, that we might be born of God,
He took our flesh, that He might give us the Spirit,
He lay in a manger that we might lie in Paradise.
He came down from Heaven, that He might bring us to Heaven”.
Matt 1:21 “And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.” (NKJV).
This shall be His great business in the world. This is the great errand on which He is come. This is the reason why He left all, and came to earth. This is why He was born. This is why we have the Christmas story!
May God bless and enrich you, your families friends and churches, and your celebrations of Christmas this year as we remember and celebrate Jesus, our Saviour, the reason for the season!
