Keep Calm – Don’t Look Down – Look Up #1

Genesis 13:14 And the Lord said to Abram, after Lot had separated from him: “

Lift your eyes now and
look from the place where you are … (NKJV).

God wanted Abram to move, so the first thing He does is to say; “… lift up your head, have a look, see, from where you are, to, where I want you to be”.

We read earlier that Lot went with Abram when he left Haran.  (See

Genesis 12:4).  But should he have?

Lot’s name means a covering, a veil.  It was not until Lot had gone his way that Abram could at last SEE!

When we are FREE we can SEE!

Maybe Lot was a veil, a covering, a blockage to Abram’s vision.  Maybe Lot should never have been with Abram.

Are you and I free to see?  What veil, blockage, baggage, burdens, attitudes, covering, character traits, sorrows, sin, frustrations, time-stealers, troubles, disappointments, are there in our life that veils what God wants us to see?

What, or who, do we need to separate from to be free to see?  Let’s be free from all the distractions that would stop us taking off into our purpose.

Distractions can be a veil that stops us being free to see.  Distractions could be having too much to do, too many good things to do, too many great opportunities, finding it hard to say no, not knowing what to say yes to, not knowing our purpose, being in spiritual bondage, or, looking down!

I was staying at a place in a major city in New Zealand for a conference with others, and one of New Zealand’s top rugby team was also staying there.  We bumped into a number of players on two occasions, nearly literally as they were coming out of the lift!  Up close and personal they are HUGE men!

The first occasion was before their game, and they were totally focused, in the zone, they didn’t engage with us at all.  In fact, they didn’t even look us in the eye, or reply to our hellos.  They were un-distractible.

The second occasion we bumped into them was after their game and was totally different.  This time they did say hello, they looked us in the eye, and were much more interactive with us and relaxed.

Our view is always safest when we look up, to Jesus!  Remember: when we are FREE we can SEE!

Picture, a Boeing 747-400, six million parts, 394 tonnes, nearly 400 passengers, full of power and potential, design and engineering, ready to fly!

Here it is, on the threshold of the runway, all loaded, ground crew finished, flight plan in place, passengers on board, cabin crew ready, pilots ready, engines running, waiting for “that” word from the control tower, “You’re cleared for takeoff!”  This is its time!

Then, at the Captain’s command, the engines are gunned, the brakes released, and the full power and potential of its design and engineering is released, and that aircraft does what is was designed to do, fly! WOW!

What a beautiful picture of the Church!  Doing what it was designed to do, take off into its destiny and fly, to take people somewhere.  What a beautiful picture of our lives!  Doing what we were designed to do, to take off into our destiny and fly, to take people somewhere.

Here’s the thing; God wants the full power and potential of your design and engineering to be released!  It happens as we Keep Calm, don’t look down, and look up!  It happens as we are free of the distractions that stop us looking at the things God has for us.

God wants the full power and potential of your design and engineering to be released!  It happens as we Keep Calm, don’t look down, and look up. — Stephen Whitwell

Transitioning successfully, (just like the 747 that transitions from the ground to flying) starts with looking in the right direction. To make the right changes we’ve got to face the right changes. To cross the bridge safely we’ve got to be looking firstly at the right bridge.

Remember, maybe Lot was a veil, a blockage to Abram’s vision.  When he was free of Lot then he could see what God wanted him to see.

Would God say this to you today; “… lift up your head, have a look, see, from where you are, to, where I want you to be”.  Maybe God wants to show you some amazing things.

Remember, no matter what’s going on; Keep Calm – Don’t Look Down – Look Up!
