You are my Portion
You are my portion, O Lord; Psalm 119:57a NKJV.
Psalm 119, the longest chapter in the Bible, and one we may be familiar with. It’s theme is the greatness and glory of God’s Word. In this Psalm there are seven basic words used to describe the Scriptures, God’s written revelation to us; law, word, judgments, testimonies, commandments, statutes, and precepts.
Although I have read this psalm many times and have an idea of what’s coming, these words struck me this morning when I read them. You are my portion.
Wow! In fact I could hardly get any more reading done. My heart leapt and my mind went crazy thinking about what those words must have meant to the Psalmist and what they mean to me.
It’s not an uncommon theme in Scripture.
- My flesh and my heart fail; But God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.
Psalm 73:26 NKJV - Lord, You are the portion of my inheritance and my cup; You maintain my lot.
Psalm 16:5 NKJV - I cried out to You, O Lord: I said, “You are my refuge, My portion in the land of the living.
Psalm 142:5 NKJV - “The Lord is my portion,” says my soul, “Therefore I hope in Him!”
Lamentations 3:24 NKJV

You are my portion.
God is unlimited, we are not. He is infinite, we are not. Therefore we can only contain a portion of Him, but we do! We get to have in us a very part and portion of the fullness of God Himself. That is amazing. And God in us, our portion, is more than enough. The measure of God we have in us is more than enough because a portion of the unlimited lives in the limited. A portion of the infinite lives in the finite. This is phenomenal. A concept that is beyond comprehension. That God, is His grace and mercy, would condescend, reduce Himself, and limit Himself to live in us. Praise His name that He does.
Here’s what Paul says to the Colossians;
For in Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily; and you are complete in Him, who is the head of all principality and power. Colossians 2:9-10 NKJV.
Did you know, that we are complete In Him — that’s our true identity. When God saved us, we were immersed into Christ, that’s where we reside. It’s our true position.
As a believer it’s where we are right now. In Him, we have everything we need. We are righteous, holy, strong, we are kings and priests, we are victorious, more than conquerors, we are blood bought sons and daughters of the Father.
Why and how? Because we have God in us.
What we need to discover is what we already have, Who we have in us, and who we already are, in Him.
We were designed for closeness with God and to have the capacity to experience Him.
- Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good;
Psalm 34:8 NKJV - To him the doorkeeper opens, and the sheep hear his voice; and he calls his own sheep byname and leads them out.
John 10:3 NKJV - Abide in Me, and I in you.
John 15:4a NKJV - that I may know Him and the power of His resurrection,
Philippians 3:10a NKJV
You are my portion.
Remember…, God in us is more than enough. He is everything, He is everything we need, He is our everything. He is my portion. God, is in us and He is everything to every part of us.
A portion, is usually thought of as small, limited, measurable. But God, the Lord, is my portion. The measure of the Divine we have is more than able to fill the human. He is El-Shaddai — more than enough. And yet in Him, when we have Him in our lives, we have more than can be measured or contained. When He is in our life, the portion, becomes Divine. It becomes other-than-human. We could not live with His complete fullness in us, so in His grace we receive a portion of His being.
There’s been many times when I have cried out to the Lord from a place of great need. And the Lord didn’t bring the answer to the need right away, but, He came! He was the (primary) answer. We think the answer to our need is the physical XYZ, but firstly we get God. Just like an earthly father would bring his child up onto his knee, cuddle them, and in reply to the child’s requests will simply say something like, yes dear, I know.
That’s the place of maximum security.
Here’s some questions I am asking of myself, and for you too.
- Is God my portion?
- Is God enough for me?
- Is God my everything?
- Is God my first waking thought and my last thought before I sleep?
- Is God my rest?
- Is God my peace?
- Is God my refuge?
- Is God my all?
- Is God the satisfaction of my soul?
I believe we can and must come to that place. I’m on a journey toward that but I want it more than anything.
Life works best when God is our portion.
And don’t forget God loves you. And further…, don’t forget that God, lives in you!
You are my portion. May that be your testimony and mine too.
