Heart Attack bookHEART ATTACKS
– they’re happening every day.

In June 2014 I had a massive heart attack that nearly took my life.  But thankfully it was not final or fatal.

This book is my story, from the moment the totally unexpected happened, the emergency hospital admission, cardio rehabilitation, recovery, building my new normal, and some hard-learned life-lessons.

Every day somewhere in the world, someone, male and female, young or old is having a heart attack.  Some will be minor, others will be major.  Many will live through it others sadly will pass away.  They happen to anyone.  They are indiscriminate attacking rich or poor, irrespective of colour, creed or race. But because you’re reading this, the heart attack that happened to me was not fatal!  Thankfully.

Everyone who has lived through their heart issue has a story to tell.  Some tell it and others don’t.
This is my story.  It’s what happened to me.

88780The lessons people learn through these times are brutal.  Lessons are forced upon us, and lifestyle changes become necessary that are in themselves life and death.  Failure to learn from life’s lessons can itself be fatal.

In 2009 I started sending out via email a Brief Word.  A short, “Brief Word” of about 1,000 words or less to encourage and inspire.  A few family and friends were bold and daring enough to subscribe.  It goes out about once a month, and has grown since those early days and it now goes into more than thirty nations around the world.  I love it.  It’s given me the chance to write and share Bible, leadership and life truths to a varied group of recipients.  It’s amazing that a simple idea and dream from years ago, is now reaching into all those nations and helping people from all sorts of walks of life in so many ways.  And all for a little of my time, a bit of technology – my computer, and that wonderful modern phenomena called the internet.  You can check it out at www.goodwords.nz/brief-word

What has that got to do with this book?  Well, it all started as a Brief Word.  After my heart attack I wrote a Brief Word about it and sent it out into the big wide cyber world.  The response was immediate and amazing.  Feedback came in from across New Zealand and as far as Africa and the United Kingdom.  When anyone is impacted by something of a life-or-death nature, it touches the heart strings and reaches down inside to emotions and feelings that often don’t get talked about unless there is a major issue.

So from 1,000 words it has morphed into a full book.  The story of what happened and some of the lessons I gleaned along the way – and ones I’m still trying to come to terms with.

What people are saying…

“Stephen Whitwell should never have written this book! What I mean is … it is a miracle that Stephen lived through his heart attack ordeals to now be in a position to reflect on the lessons he has learned”.
Kelvin Clout, Deputy Mayor, Tauranga City Council
“A clear, brave analysis of a personal crisis, frankly told, with wit and valuable practical helps. Many will identify with, and gain comfort from, this story”.
George Bryant, Author / Publisher
“I have known Stephen Whitwell for a number of years and think this book will prove to be very helpful for those who have suffered physical ailments, unexpected happenings in their lives. It shows us be aware of what we can do before these unforeseen experiences hit us. Let us learn from what Stephen has been through”.
Rodney W. Francis , Founder/Director: The Gospel Faith Messenger Ministry
“A great read. Stephen has captured a moment in time that is not unlike the picture that Jesus painted of the house built upon the rock versus the one built upon sand. The storm certainly shook his ‘house’ but his principles stood firm”.
David Dishroon, Senior Pastor, Changepoint church, Tauranga
